About the Book

Every house call has a story.

Being a veterinarian in New York City means seeing much more than the animal sitting in front of you.

For Dr. Jeff Levy, house calls offered a unique window into the relationships people have with their pets and into the city itself.

Over the course of his career, Jeff has treated animals in homes across New York, meeting an unforgettable cast of dogs, cats, owners, characters, and personalities along the way.

Pet Vet House Calls brings together some of those stories.

Some are funny. Some are touching. Some are completely unexpected. Together, they tell the story of a veterinarian, his patients, and the extraordinary city they call home.

Why I Wrote This Book

A note from Dr. Jeff

I have spent much of my life walking into people’s homes carrying a veterinary bag.

What I quickly learned was that a house call is rarely just about an animal.

You meet families. You hear stories. You see the relationship between people and the animals they love. And sometimes, you find yourself becoming part of those stories yourself.

After decades of practicing veterinary medicine in New York City, I realized how many remarkable moments had accumulated along the way.

I wrote this book because I wanted to remember them and share them.

It is a book about animals, certainly, but it is also about people, New York City, and the strange, funny, touching connections that happen when you are invited through someone’s front door.

I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I have enjoyed remembering them.
